Spelling and Grammar are Important
On LinkedIn last fall there was a question posted about whether or not people really throw out or exclude internship and job resumes or applications just because of spelling and grammar mistakes or typos. There were over 500 responses. Guess what? The predominant answer is YES!
Errors give an impression of you. The resume screener might think you are lazy, uneducated, or rushing too much rather than taking time to do the work properly. A poorly written resume says more about you than your employment history. If it's full of spelling mistakes, grammar errors and typos, most human resume screeners will discard it. Most electronic systems will never find you, so you might as well have been discarded or deleted from the database.
No employer wants unprofessional, uneducated or lazy employees. They don't want people who have to go back and redo their work because they were in too much of a hurry to do it correctly the first time. To an employer's mind this is money down the drain. They don't want employees who will cost them more in the long run by having to redo work, or because their work requires someone to follow them around making corrections. Why should a company give you a chance if you won't make the time to give yourself a proper chance?
As a job applicant, making sure your resume is written correctly is your responsibility. Even if you hire someone to write it, you are the one who gives the final OK. So check and double-check and triple check!
